BalancingOnTwoWheels started life as a journal for me to record some of my cycling experiences, something a little more interesting than ride statistics. This place has evolved over the years reflecting the way faith and life are interwoven.
Metaphors never fully describe the reality, but can help me to understand and communicate faith sometimes. For example, my faith was once like a bright pebble on the beach of my experiences. I went to church and picked up the pebble of my faith like a valuable object, I loved it and cared for it and put it back when I left the church building. Later my faith became like a thread in the tapestry of my experiences. A shining thread which illuminated the rest of the tapestry. The thread was not my life’s story, but it was woven throughout the story of life. More recently faith and life have become indistinguishable, there is no discrete object known as ‘faith’ in my life, there is now only ‘life in faith’. Faith in Jesus. The tapestry became a journey and the journey is travelled alongside other peoples – alongside your journey too.
Cycling used to be a hobby, currently it is more like a physical metaphor for my spiritual journey. Endurance, freedom and full immersion in God’s good creation. The nation of Israel understands the most important commandment starts with a word which can be translated into English as ‘listen’. What follows is an encouragement to worship with all of your created-ness. Your heart, your mind, your soul, your strength.
I lift up my eyes to the mountains
where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.
He will not let your foot slip
he who watches over you will not slumber;
indeed, he who watches over Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.
The Lord watches over you
the Lord is your shade at your right hand;
the sun will not harm you by day,
nor the moon by night.
The Lord will keep you from all harm
he will watch over your life;
the Lord will watch over your coming and going
both now and forevermore.
